Why the most specific thing about you is also the most powerful.

Creativity is one of the most misunderstood words in the English language.

Most of us learned it as a noun that described a category of people — the artists, the writers, the musicians. The ones who were obviously talented in ways that showed. If you weren't in that category, creativity was something you admired in others but didn't claim for yourself.

I'd like to offer a completely different way of seeing this.

Creativity isn't a talent or a personality type. It's an energy — the animating force behind everything you think, feel, sense, and bring into being. Every choice you make is a creative act. The way you set a table, or arrange your day, or approach a problem that has no obvious solution, or hold space for someone who is struggling — all of it is your creative energy in motion. You've been using it your whole life. You just may not have been calling it that.

My husband works in insurance. He loves his job with a genuine enthusiasm that I find genuinely inspiring. As a child he used to set up a desk in his room with a rolodex and a typewriter and play office. Now he creates elaborate spreadsheets that archive his family history in searchable form, plays guitar, and finds deep satisfaction in helping people navigate something overwhelming. His creativity comes in through warmth and precision and care. It looks nothing like mine — and it's no less real.

Creativity isn't a department of life. It's the current that runs underneath all of it — and it moves differently through every person.

This matters because one of the most reliable ways creative energy gets blocked is through comparison. When we measure ourselves against someone whose gifts run in completely different channels, we inevitably come up short — not because we're lacking, but because we're using the wrong measure entirely.

Your creative energy is specific to you. As particular and unrepeatable as you are. It doesn't look exactly like anyone else's, and it's not supposed to. The most powerful thing you can do with it is learn to recognize it — in all the places it's already showing up in your life — and start working with it consciously rather than dismissing it as ordinary.
